Student Loan Repayment
Repayments for loans start at the end of the seventh month after graduation or from the date you stop attending school. If you are not working or have a low income you may qualify for interest relief. You have to phone the National Student Loans Service Center at 1-888-815-4514 to request an application for interest relief. You have to call the Center at the beginning of the sixth month if you wish to apply for interest relief and it will take effect in the seventh month.
Example: Graduate in June. No payments are made for 6 months. Apply for interest relief at the beginning of the sixth month – December, to apply in January. Your repayments will start at the end of January.
You should receive a letter from the National Student Loans Service Center before the 6 month grace period is over, stating how much and when the repayments of your loans will start. The interest on your Canada Student Loan accrues from the first day of the month following the Period of Study End Date or withdrawal date. In conclusion, within six months of completing full-time studies, you must contact your financial institution or the National Student Loans Service Center to consolidate all your loans and set up a repayment schedule. You will have the option to pay the six months interest separately or capitalize the accrued interest to the principal amount. However, if you fail to consolidate, the six months interest will be capitalized to the principal amount. Your repayments will start at the end of the seventh month as in the example above.
It is VERY IMPORTANT that you notify the National Student Loans Service Center at 1-888-815-4514 if you haven’t set up a repayment schedule or you can not start making payments whether you receive a letter or not. If you don’t do this you will be in default and this will affect your credit rating and the possibility of not getting further student loan funding for future courses. It should also be noted that Student Loan debt must be repaid and it can not be eliminated even by bankruptcy. It will catch up with you even if there is no contact made by them after the first letter is sent out before you graduate or if a letter is returned because you have moved. If you have moved please call and give them your new address. It is easier and better for you if you make arrangements for repayment or interest relief before the payments are due to start or you can’t make the payments and default on your loan.
